Intelligent Automation
Intelligent Automation enables business processes to be enhanced when when they contain activities which require text extraction from documents or emails.
Sometimes the acronym IA is used but this suffer from people thinking it is a typo of AI (Artificial Intelligence).
What Makes the Automation Intelligent?
Essentially it is inclusion of AI into the processing that adds the “Intelligence”.
In most scenarios Machine Learning (ML) is also deployed with Human In The Loop (HITL) for the AI processed material to be reviewed, with the adjustments used for the ML activity to enhance the AI model.
Natural Language Processing (NLP) is often considered as part of Intelligent Automation. The typical scenario being a Chatbot conversation is involved in providing access to the automation.
Do AI tools provide Intelligent Automation?
There are many AI tools available and many recognise that the AI aspect alone does not deliver a practical solution, so they are supplemented by a number of pre-built automations
In order to get effective use of many AI tools, they need to be integrated into existing business processes. This is usually achieved with RPA technology.
Is Intelligent Automation focussed on Documents?
The digital handling of paper documents started with Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology. This digital process also started the Human In The Loop (HITL) configurations. Initially all documents processed through OCR would be reviewed by people.
For some types of documents that were highly standardised, templates could be used and process automation could deliver a portion of Straight Through Processing (STP).
Tools such as RPA were used to operate the process, with fixed rules about what should be reviewed.
With the addition of AI, it has enable such processes to become Intelligent Automation.
The AI has been used to enhance the extraction achieved with OCR. This enables better results for processing by the RPA and enables the Human review activity to generate feedback into the ML loop that improves the future performance of the AI.
It is this background which has led to Intelligent Automation often being associated with Intelligent Document Processing (IDP).
