Document Management

Many organisations have been strong users of Document Management systems for a number of years. The technology is well established and the benefits are well understood. Document Management is one flavour of Content Management.

The essential difference between content management and document management is the independent management of the content from the presentation. If a change is made to the Font of a word, this will result in a new version of a document, under Document Management. In a Content Managed environment, there is no change in content but there is a change in the presentation information. The content and the presentation are independently managed.

Scanning of incoming paper documents is often the starting point for Document Management systems. Once captured the documents can be handled through integrated workflow technology so that the appropriate actions can be taken.
